ABOUT MANCHESTER ENTREPRENEURS

Founded in 2008, Manchester Entrepreneurs was set up to create and educate a community of future business and society leaders. Today, the community has flourished and comprises over 2100 members, being one of the largest student societies in the UK. Our past members range from successful business and social entrepreneurs to high performing employees of successful SMEs and FTSE companies. Our goal is to provide our members with access to information, mentors and funds by working very closely with Manchester Enterprise Centre, Careers Centre and universities in Manchester. We organize speaker series and workshops focused on developing valuable business skills and giving our members opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of their interest. On top of that, Manchester Entrepreneurs have founded the first business and enterprise focused university publication which is printed in 5000 copies every term and have hosted National Student Enterprise Conference organized in 2011. Our outlook for future is focused on integrating in universities by as much cooperation as possible and maintaining the same growth rate as we have before, which will allow us deliver our members the best support available in Manchester.

'WHAT NEXT?' CAREERS CONFERENCE

This is an exclusive conference discussing the state of graduate employment in the UK covering problems like unemployment, working for various size companies as well as starting a company. The conference will be organised along Manchester Enterprise Centre.'What Next?' will redefine the way 200 aspiring students see graduate employment. The Student Apprentice No Frame

THE STUDENT APPRENTICE

The Student Apprentice is a competition for 60 students, which aims to offer a unique opportunity to test practical skills in real world scenarios. The competi-tion will run over 5 days commencin in February 2012 at the University of Manchester. Testing everything required to be successful in business, such as sales, entrepreneurial spirit, and incredible dedication. Students will have the chance to develop and showcase their abilities. The week will compose of daily tasks where 12 teams of 5 students will compete against each other to make it through to the next day, until 2 teams are left for a final challenge with the winner receiving a prize of £1000.The event builds on the highly successful Student Apprentice 2010, which was open to University of Manchester students and ran in March 2010. In its first year the Student Apprentice, was supported by Rolls-Royce, PwC, Flying Start, and Southwestern. The competition had over 250 applications, received great feedback from our 50 participants, and the winning team took home a £1000 prize

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

University is a place that helps you get more knowledge about the subject of your interest, yet it does not often help you with skills that you will need in your work life.These skills range from simple B2B communication to more specialised business skills like Sales or Leadership. This is where Skills Development Workshops come in. We organise a series of workshops all targeting specific skill giving you opportunity not only to get an insight of application in professional life but to actually practice in real life invironment. Manchester Entrepreneurs are strong believers in learning through practice and our workshops are designed accordingly. When we talk about B2B we approach businesses and when we discuss Sales we go and do sales. Venture Out

VENTURE OUT 2011

Venture Out is an annual ideas competition which provides the opportunity to recognise, celebrate and in some cases reward, creative and enterprising students from the University of Manchester. We want you to describe how youve been enterprising, explaining how your ideas will have, or are having, a positive impact on the lives of others and the world in which we live.This year we have 3 categories:-2020 award - Rewarding ideas to enable the University of Manchester to become one of the worlds leading universities-Social Enterprise award - Rewarding ideas to improve the lives of individuals and of communities-Business Innovation award - Rewarding ideas that have commercial potential through new products or servicesMore details on each category can be found by going to the How to Enter page and clicking on and downloading the Entry Form for the category that you are interested in.Resources, guidance, inspiration and news of supporting workshops can be found on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MEC.Venture.Out. We realise that coming up with ideas can sometimes need a bit of a kick-start and so few weeks prior to competition, we are asking students to tweet us the problems that you would like to see solved. £10 CHALLENGE

This event is run over 3 days and brings together 60 students grouped in 12 teams to test their ability to work in teams, work under pressure and apply crea-tivity. Each team will start with £10 and trade their way up to become the high-est earning team in 48 hours of consecutive business environment.Aims of the Event: To give students real business experience while at university. To help students develop ability to work in teams, ability to work under pressure, sales skills, persuasion skills and creativity; all vital in the world of work.By the end of event every team will have to submit a 500-1000 word report by the end of competition and present their case in front of panel of judges. The team with highest profit will be awarded £250 cash prize at the Award Cere-mony. Judges will also select the Most Entrepreneurial Team awarding £100 for the most creative business ideas.

BIG SALES CHALLENGE

Sales skill is one of the skills graduate employers say students lack after graduation. Big Sales Challenge is exactly what it says on the tin. Event will give you an introduction to sales and will give you the opportunity to practice your skills in the field.Big Sales Challenge will provide 40 students with a product and allow you to go on the field to sell it. You will be to choose strategy, approach and the costumer. You will work in teams for consecutive 3 hours and the team with the highest sales will win half of all the total profits of all teams together. Last year the winning team received £500.Aims:To introduce you to selling.To teach you how to deal with rejections.To give you edge over other students.To provide you with potential income.

THE IDEAS FACTORY
The Ideas Factory is aimed at 1st and 2nd year students who may not yet have a specific business idea. They can meet up with other students looking to increase their entrepreneurial skills to work on challenges and activities set by the team.The team will be on hand to advise how to develop your ideas and take them forward. Going Freelance

GOING FREELANCE
The Going Freelance course is aimed at creative students that want to enter the world as self employed, as practitioners or as freelance artists. Delivered over a number of weeks the course is delivered by the NW HE Enterprise Champions team and uses activities from the NESTA toolkit.The attendees work individually on their business idea as well as working in small groups on each others ideas showing how valuable an outside opinion can be on your ideas.The course will be running in early 2012.Event will take place in MMU, Sandra Burslem building 1pm til 4pm in room G.08 on Wed 16th Nov, 14th Dec,18th Jan, 15th Feb, 21st Mar.*This event is run by NW HE Enterprise Champions, funded by ERDF

New Directions

New Directions
On 13th & 14th June 2011 we ran a two-day pre-start enterprise event called New Directions. We wrote and delivered 6 sessions that culminated in a business generation session where 7 new business ideas were created.The event attracted over 75 students and recent graduates who all participated in the two-day activity filled programme. The activities were based around knowing and developing yourself as an enterprising individual, creating ideas, exploring opportunities and making things happen. ENTREPRENEUR FIRST
Entrepreneur First is a new initiative to provide a prestigious and practical route into entrepreneurship for top graduates from all backgrounds. Announced in March by David Cameron, and backed by some of Britains leading entrepreneurs, EF offers young entrepreneurs everything they need to start their own business when they graduate. This includes free personal mentorship, training, networking opportunities, access to funding and in-kind support. PRO INNOVATOR
Future ProManchester is once again giving its members and Greater Manchester students the chance to pit their wits against the city's most innovative thinkers and take part in the future pro•manchester Professional Innovator Challenge 2012.•The future ProManchester Professional Innovator Challenge aims to recognise innovative flair in rising stars from the financial and professional services and student communities •Offers great opportunities for members to showcase their innovative talent. Entrants will be asked to respond to a series of challenges around the six key attributes of an entrepreneur including: ability to adapt, creativity and persuasive power. The challenges will be written and judged by a panel of leading business experts including serial entrepreneur Imran Hakim and digital futurist Mike Ryan and the successful entrants will ultimately be asked to come up against the judges in an interview before the winner is announced at an awards ceremony on March 29th. There is also a full events programme running alongside the challenge focusing on Innovation in Professional Services. Edwin Broni-Mensah

EDWIN BRONI-MENSAH
From the age of 5 Edwin has been fascinated by the process of problem solving. Born in North London, there werent many days in Edwin's childhood that weren't spent looking for a ways to change or improve his environment. At 7, he set his sights on creating computer games and this led him into the world of Mathematics and Technology. His aptitude for learning saw him create various games, and during his studies he formed a virtual games company called Broken Attitude with a group of budding computer programmers. Though Edwin excelled in Mathematics, he surprisingly enjoyed the arts. For 2 years he featured in the popular BBC children's programme Grange Hill. He sailed through his A-levels, and onto The University of Manchester, where he obtained a 1st class degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. Due to his academic excellence and passion for his subject, Edwin was subsequently awarded a PhD scholarship at the University of Manchester. Given his yearning to solve complex problems, in the summer, before commencement of his PhD in Mathematical Finance, Edwin secured his second placement with a top investment bank, Goldman Sachs, having also worked their as an intern in the summer of his penultimate year as a undergrauate. Additionally, he completed another 3 month work placement at Goldman Sachs whilst study for his PhD.Alongside his academic pursuits, Edwin has an insatiable appetite for entrepreneurship. During University he started three very different enterprises. He began with Origin Signed in 2006 helping his friend launch a laptop customisation business. In 2008 he created his first company FreeMyIdea.com: a platform help entrepreneurs meet with investors to raise seed-funding. His understanding of the investment landscape, led to him being appointed the Ventures Director for the University of Manchester's Enterprise Society. In this role he created a Micro-fund that is used to award aspiring students with seed-capital to start their own enterprises. Above all, Edwin values solving problems which help change peoples lives and environment. Since completing his studies Edwin, has devoted his time to growing his social enterprise GiveMeTap. Through GiveMeTap, Edwin is on a mission to make clean water easily accessible to every human in the world and does this by selling reusable water bottles that provide people with free water refills from selected cafes and restaurants across the UK. GiveMeTap then uses 70% of its profits to fund independent water projects in Africa. Edwin, envisions a future where around every corner there is access to the gift of clean water, and has captured the imagination of several organisations that support his vision, and has received awards from UnLtd, Shell LiveWIRE, Virgin Media Pioneers, The University of Manchester Venture Further Competition, The Future 100, and The Arthur Guinness Fund. On a personal note, Edwin was named 'The Most Outstanding Black Student in the UK' last September for his academic and entrepreneurial activities.

Joseph Akinnagbwe

JOSEPH AKINNAGBE
Joseph Akinnagbe moved from Lagos, Nigeria in 2008 to study a BA in Economics and Finance at the University of Manchester. Along with being a student hes also an aspiring entrepreneur, strategist, student activist and community volunteer.Josephs achievements have been well recognised the latest being the first international student to be awarded the NUS/Endsleigh UK Student of the Year. He was also the youngest ever President of Manchester Entrepreneurs, an organisation he built to be the largest university entrepreneur network in the North of the UK, with membership of over 2000 and led to winning the 2010 best UK Entrepreneurship Society by the National Council of Graduate Entrepreneurs and National Enterprise Educators. He is passionate about empowering others and his activities spread deep into the community, including teaching IT skills to disadvantaged kids and supporting a campaign to help sufferers of Lupus. Josephs innovation and impact in the community have led to him being granted several awards and bursaries including a Manchester Leadership Gold Award. Joseph is also an accomplished student leader, having been elected unto several representative positions including the union executive as the International Students Officer at the University of Manchester, the University with the largest number of International students in the UK. Recently, Joseph was one of only 24 recipients of a British council international students award out of over 1200 entries in recognition of his achievements since coming to the UK in September 2008.In July 2011 Joseph graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class in BA Economics specialising in Economics and Finance. He ranked in the top 10 out of 687 students on the BA Economics programme.

Henry Lisc

HENRY LISC
Henry is the Founder of Manchester Entrepreneurs. He holds a Management Degree at The University of Manchester. The society was founded during his final year of study at the university and was determined to create a unique group with individuals of great minds to achieve great things together. It has been done through Education and the creation of Innovative Projects in a sustainable way. Henry now lives in Cambridge, UK and is also the Founder of Anglia Ruskin Entrepreneurs based in Cambridge and Chelmsford. He is currently working on full time at Standard Chartered Bank in Shanghai, China. During his free time, he is building up projects between Emerging Economies and UK in the field of Green Energy, Technology and Medicine. These projects will form a new and sustainable platform which will assist and enable Manchester Entrepreneurs Alumni to take part in to create a better support system.

To incentivise you we have partnered with Manchester Enterprise Centre and NW Enterprise Champions and developed a Skills Development Certificate, which will outline exactly what skills you have worked on while participatin at our events. By the end of the academic year in May we will award student who have attended at least 5 of our skills focused events with a Skills Development Certificate. The certificate will help you understand how you have developed through the year and will encourage you to learn more.
